What Causes Unusual Engine Noises?
Certain noises can indicate problems with your car’s engine. By recognizing these sounds and having your mechanic diagnose the cause early on, you can often prevent expensive damage to your engine. Here are a few engine noises that can indicate it’s time to take your car in for service.
Screeching or Whining Sounds
These sounds are often a symptom of one of these problems:
- A loose or worn-out serpentine belt
- A failing power steering pump, or low power steering fluid
- A malfunctioning AC compressor
- A bad alternator or water pump
Exhaust Noises
Excessively loud or unusual exhaust noises are typically caused by a worn out muffler or a cracked exhaust manifold.
Engine Backfiring
When the engine backfires when pressing the gas pedal it is usually caused by a faulty camshaft timing belt, ignition timing that is out of adjustment, or spark plug wires that are not connected in the right firing order.
Because backfiring can cause severe engine damage, we recommend not running the engine until the vehicle is checked out by a mechanic.
Engine Stuttering and Popping Noises
If the engine hesitates and doesn’t accelerate responsively when pressing the gas, it could be caused by several problems, including:
- A clogged air filter
- Dirty fuel injectors or clogged fuel filter
- Ignition system problem such as a bad distributor, dirty spark plugs, or worn out ignition wires
Engine Tapping or Clicking Sounds
The first thing you should do right way if your engine is making clicking sounds is check the engine oil level.
If the sound is metallic and pinging, it’s likely a condition called detonation knock. Engine knocking can be caused by using the wrong octane gas. Check your car’s owner’s manual for the minimum recommended octane level for the gas you use.
If you hear unusual sounds from your engine, don’t wait to have the car checked out by a qualified mechanic. By fixing the small problems right away you can prevent major repairs down the road.
